My Part of the Ocean

I just got a fish tank and I will tell you a bit about what I've done until now. I will also tell you how to have a healthy tank.

Study Up!

I've been trying to figure out what type of fish I will get. I've always wanted to get seahorses so I studied them and found fish to get that are easy to take care of and are compatable with seahorses. I researched what type of enviroment they should have and how to keep them healthy. If you want to keep your own part of the ocean you should find what fish you want and what you want, how to keep it healthy and the enviroment it should be in. You should get fish that are easy to take care of with it (see bottom). You should spend time on the decision.

Finding a Fish Store

You should find a good fish store that will be willing to give advice and answer your questions. The store should specailize on fish. Call your fish store if you have any trouble or any questions. It is very helpful to have a good fish store that knows you. Spend time looking for a good fish store.

Climate

This website is for tanks that are tropical. The climate for tropical fish should have a temperature ranging from 74 degrees Farenheit to 80 degrees Farenheit. The specific gravity (most people go by specific gravity) should be around 1.024. The oxygen should be saturated (6ppm)and the pH should be 8.1-8.3. the nitrite and ammonium should 0ppm and the nitrate should be 5-0ppm.

Cycling

Before you get any living organisms you need to cycle the tank for three weeks.

  1. When you buy the buy the tank and all the other supplies, buy destilled or bottled water. Personally I choose destilled water.
  2. Fill the tank with the water you need and put the salt in (you should put 1/2 a cup of salt per gallon you have in the tank).
  3. Once you put in the salt, test it with the refractometer. There should be directions in the box. Adjust until it is the right specific gravity (see Climate).
  4. Put the filter cartridge in the filter and turn on the filter on.
  5. Put the heater in and let it sit there for 30 minutes.
  6. Then, when the 30 minutes gone up, turn on the heater.
  7. When the salt dissolves you can take a break; you have the the first step done.

Now your aquarium is ready to put in the sand. You could just lift the top of the aquarium off and pour the sand in. At first it will be very cloudy. Wait a day until it clears up. When it is clear, atach the lights and the pump to the aquarium. Plug them in and go to the fish store and buy live rocks. Design a structure with the live rock that will enable the water flow to circulate the rocks. You should notice that there are some snails and corals, but that is fine, you dont have to feed them for a couple weeks. Call your fish store and test the ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and pH. From now on you should test the ammonium and nitrite every other day and the pH and nitrate every four days. Congratulations! You have a set up aquarium. You should wait three weeks before getting you first fish or coral.

The cloun fish is another fish that is easy to take care of and very compatable with other fish.

flaming prawn goby

The flaming prawn goby is a type of goby. Gobies are in a lot of small tanks and will do good with many fish. Don't get gobies that are too big, because they aren't as compatable.
